I was a major fan of the Feelgood's in the 70's and 'Stupidity' was the best vinyl I ever bought. Lost some interest when the great Wilko Johnson left but recently bought a video of them at a Cheltenham gig and must admit John Mayo was a fine replacement.
Incidentally, wasn't 'Dr Feelgood' a synonym for a drug pusher?

So pay attention when some dusty old vinyl hound tells you his scratchy
old mono discs sound better than your stereo reissues. They were supposed
to. Still, the sound has taken its time in re-emerging into the mainstream.
As far back as 1974, British pub rockers Dr Feelgood launched a "Back
To Mono" campaign which climaxed in the release of their debut album
in that glorious medium. But people laughed back then, as hard as they
are doubtless laughing today, now that the first Pink Floyd album has reappeared
in mono.

I work
in a home entertainment warehouse, and have just bought a Dr Feelgood video
'Live Legends' cat.no 630 308 3 £5.99 uk.
Billed as gig no 137 of their 18th year on the road (Cheltenham) it is
obviously post Wilko Johnson, but this is truly one hour of excellent entertainment
and I highly recommend it.

Spooky,
this.
After donkey's years of not thinking about Kokomo (who I last saw in about
1974, possibly on the same bill as Dr Feelgood)
up comes this thread and then up comes Tony O'Malley, playing and singing
on last night's Jazz 606 on Beeb2. One of the more enjoyable acts on the
show as well.

A friend told me of a chat he had with Lee Brilleaux of Dr Feelgood a few years ago. I don't know how they got on to this, but Lee said that the Feelgood number 'No More Dough, Kokomo' was written about Kokomo. Apparently Kokomo were connected in some way to Feelgood (label/managament/promoter), and kept asking for large amounts of money, to the point where Feelgood severed the connection, and went on to write the song. Anyone know anything about this?

In December of '76, Bob Marley got shot, then spent the following year
in exile - in London. Man, that must have been something. Marley walkin
around in the midst of the punk scene.
He was into it, too, and wrote "Punky Reggae Party" with the
chorus:
"The

Maytals will be there, Dr. Feelgood,
too.
No boring old farts, no boring old farts, no boring old farts will be there.

I first saw the Feelgoods on tv in 1974 cranking out "Done it Right" on the Old Grey Whistle Test. They blew me away. Amongst all the glam rock tossers & ersatz californian hippies on that show, they were the only band that had the same energy as the early Who and Stones. Saw them again live several times in Essex and London. At the Odeon Hammersmith, they had the whole place on its feet within two bars. Then they did the unforgivable - they broke up! It just wasn't the same after that. Sure, Gypie Mayo was pretty good but the original line up had that special chemistry. Seeing Wilko on his own was like seeing Paul McCartney without Lennon. I would describe them as the LAST GREAT BRITISH R'nB band. No ten minute solos, no attempts at fake blues authenticity - just energy and rhythmn. That's what it's all about.

I'm a
bassist who will be moving to Bristol at the end of March, and want to
find a band. Does anyone know of good places to look and/or advertise?
I'm fairly open-minded about the kind of band I'd like; I listen to stuff
ranging from Motorhead, Metallica and AC/DC, through Screaming Trees and
Rocket from The Crypt, to The Black Crowes, Fun Lovin' Criminals, ZZ Top
and then into straight blues (BB King, Fleetwood Mac, Buddy Guy, Dr Feelgood,
Blues'n'Trouble, SRV). I also like some country rock (e.g. Dan Baird/Georgia
Satellites), and wouldn't be averse to playing in a country band. Okay,
it may not be *that* wide-ranging, one thing they have in common is that
they all have balls, my main priority in finding a band.
Grateful for any help.

Other artists took the opportunity to extend their love of R&B and
marry it to the energy of '70s punk and there were no better exponents
of this synthesis than the great Dr. Feelgood. The Doctors were extremely
successful throughout the mid- to late-'70s and an incarnation of the band

I don't go with the New Wave is the '80's line ...
...
By the time of the punk explosion of '76 there were clearly punk bands
and New Wave bands, although things were a little muddy
...
However, to muddy things even further, the UK New Wave was a different
kettle of fish. That grew out of pub rock - from 1974/5 Eddie and the Hot
Rods and Dr Feelgood being the leading lights - their hard edged, guitar
based r+b being a direct pre-cursor of punk
...
In fact, the Feelgood's managers Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman were
the people who set up Stiff Records, which was the first and most influential
UK punk/New Wave label.
To further demonstrate the links and the lack of definition between early
New Wave and punk - the first Stiff single was by Nick Lowe, who was from
the first pub-rock band, Brinsley Schwarz, God bless 'em - and the next
few recordings were by Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, The Damned, Motorhead
and a whole jigsaw of others.
So for the first UK New Wave band, I go for Dr Feelgood. And for the first
single, I would go for something like Dr Feelgood's 'Roxette'.
